It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we mourn the death of our beloved alumni student and friend . .
Rebeca Olivera was a Spring 2015 Environmental Engineering graduate and was involved in numerous organizations across campus.
She had gone back to school to pursue a Master’s Degree at the University of Monterrey. Friends said she wanted to make a difference in Mexico cleaning up water pollution.
According to the El horizante Newspaper, Rebeca died after suffering second and third degree burns when a gas leak in her apartment caused an explosion.
Below is a note from Dr. Richard A. Behr, Dean, U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering regarding the Vigil held in Rebeca’s honor:
“I wish to thank everyone from WCE who showed up at last evening’s vigil to mourn the loss of one of our recent Environmental Engineering graduates: Rebeca Olivera, who passed away in Mexico on 9/5/15. Our college had a strong presence that enriched the strength and meaning of that vigil. I was very moved and impressed with the entire event. We will soon be organizing a contribution from the College in Rebeca Olivera’s memory. Thank you all again.”
