The FGCU Wrestling club achieved its highest honor last week from the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) when the team captured the Division II National Championship. FGCU defeated the defending champions from MIT by a margin on 7.5 points – a win that was secured with the help of Giovanni Jiovenetta’s 5th place finish in the 174 weight class. In FGCU’s last match of the day, Jiovenetta needed a win to catapult the team over MIT’s expected point total. In true Nationals fashion, Jiovenetta’s match went into double overtime, resulting with a 3-2 finish in the Eagles favor. That result clenched the club’s first team National Championship, and the 5th nationals title for FGCU Sports Clubs.
The club officers and coaches had been looking forward to this year’s meet as a chance to truly put the FGCU club on the map. In a statement released by the club on Monday, they had the following to say:
“All nine of our FGCU Wrestlers all had at least one win, many had multiple wins, and one wrestler – Giovanni (Gio) Jiovenetta won his final match 3-2 in double overtime to secure our Team’s National Championship over M.I.T., and the rest of the DII field. That final win also secured Gio Jiovenetta’s All-American status with his personal 5th place (*AA) finish! Gio Jiovenetta is now FGCU’s third All-American wrestler since 2006. Tariq Humes was our first All-American, then Nathan Behrent became our Team’s first 3X All-American.”
